Girl Learns Money Lesson With Wal-Mart's Non-Raincheck
Store Did Not Issue Raincheck For Gameboy
Have you taught your kids how to be smart shoppers? When a Longmont mom's attempt fell short, she turned to Consumer Champ Bill Clarke for help.
Shopping for new toys was the reward Ferin got for doing her chores.
"I saved up my money for a while and then we went to Wal-mart," said 10-year-old Ferin.
And just before Christmas, she figured she'd spend her allowance on a new Gameboy.
"Let's look through the ads and see if someplace has a special. And then you can get more for your money," her mom Cari told her.
The price tag on a new Gameboy was a bit steep so her mom used the Christmas wish as an opportunity to teach her daughter a lesson, and boy, did she get a lesson.
"So we went to get one and they were out of stock. And they didn't give us a rain check or anything," Ferin said.
"When we got there and they were unwilling to issue the rain check which they said in black in white they would do, I was a little taken a back," Cari said.
The Wal-mart ad promised a rain check but Ferin and her mom left the store empty-handed.
And then they e-mailed Call 7 for Help. We contacted Wal-mart's corporate headquarters. They told us that the folks at the Longmont Wal-mart "plain made a mistake."
And to make up for it they sent Ferin a free Gameboy and a game. But Ferin had already bought another Gameboy for twice as much.
But she did get that lesson her mom wanted her to get.
"Instead of saving money and making her money go further, she found out that you really want to support the people who stand behind what they say," Cari said.
Ferin said she plans to donate that brand new Gameboy to charity next Christmas.
