Residents Suggest Recall Of Greeley Mayor Amid Raid Controversy

Greeley Mayor Tom Selders Criticized After Visit To Capitol

Some residents have suggested a recall of Greeley Mayor Tom Selders after he made a recent visit to Washington, D.C. where he described to Congressional lobbyists how last year's federal immigration raid in Greeley devastated local families.

"The bulk of the reaction we have been getting is negative to the trip," said KFKA radio news director Troy Coverdale.

KFKA said the immigration raid five months ago has been a heated topic, and now Selders' visit to the nation's Capitol has struck a cord with residents.

The controversy comes after ICE conducted a raid at the Greeley Swift & Co. meatpacking plant in December, rounding up about 260 workers. District Attorney Ken Buck said most of the workers who were taken were using an identity other than their own.

The raid prompted Selders to push for immigration reform during his visit last Thursday.

One of Selders' critics is Joy Breuer, a life-long Greeley resident who runs a ministry for the homeless.

"We have got to stop this. It's got to stop," she said. "We have to bring some law and order back to our town, to our county, to Colorado. I say if you are doing something illegal we have some recourse for you because a lot of them don't."

Selders said in a released statement Tuesday, "I've been bombarded by the media the past few weeks and I'm just ready to move on. I've got better things to do."

Selders also has supporters.

"We see that raids are not the solutions for the immigration issue," said human rights advocate Danielle Short with American Friends Service Committee in Denver. "We think they terrorize communities. So, we think he showed political courage in standing up, and it shows how deeply that community was affected."

Selders is in his second two-year term as Greeley's mayor. This is his second threat of a recall during his time as mayor.

According to KFKA, Selders reportedly survived a recall attempt in his first term during a controversy with regard to a new police station. However, once the controversy subsided, he was elected for a second term.

While some believe Selders overstepped his role as mayor, he said he has no plan to drop out of November's mayoral election. So far, he is running for re-election unopposed.

Coverdale said someone will likely capitalize on the controversy and join the race.
