Controlled Burn Gets Out Of Control

Several Out Buildings Destroyed, Homes Threatened

UPDATED: 9:10 pm MST March 28, 2002

A fire in Adams County damaged a dairy farm and threatened several homes in the Riverdale Road and Holly Street area before it was contained Thursday, 7NEWS reported.

According to 7NEWS reporter Julie Hayden, who was at the scene, people were panicking and fighting with law enforcement because they weren't being allowed to go to their homes.

Several people standing behind the perimeter told Hayden how they are worried about their horses, their pets and their property.

The fire started as a controlled burn near the ditch along Riverdale Road, but gusty winds whipped it out of control, 7NEWS reported. Lack of moisture and snow in the past few weeks have also exacerbated the dry conditions.

Authorities say the high wind is just too strong and too unpredictable to let people into the area.

The brush fire burned about 15 to 20 acres and was still smoldering Thursday evening.

Several outbuildings, including storage sheds and a mobile home trailer were burnt all the way to the ground, AirTracker 7 pilot Rich Westra said.

Flames jumped Riverdale Road and started to spread eastward, to a storage shed that was located next to a home.

There were no injuries as a result of the fast-moving fire.
