Police say a suspect accused of going on a crime spree for the last two months has been arrested. The investigation started in south Jefferson County after several nighttime burglaries and car thefts in March. In most cases, the burglar entered homes through open garage doors or unlocked windows, many times while victims were asleep inside.Jefferson County deputies started talking to other agencies and found similar burglaries and car thefts.
"The nexus in these cases became clear as the suspect began a pattern of stealing a vehicle from one burglary scene and subsequently abandoning the stolen auto at the location of the next burglary, at which time a new vehicle was stolen," Jefferson County's Jim Shires said in a news release. On May 2, a Colorado State Patrol trooper spotted one of those stolen cars -- a red Mercedes -- and it led him to David Heckman, 31.Heckman was pulled over in the area of C-470 and Quincy Avenue. He allegedly fled the area on foot before he was chased and taken into custody, police said.Inside the Mercedes, the trooper found several stolen IDs, credit cards, checkbooks, cellular phones and other miscellaneous items, much of which could be linked to several residential burglaries, Shires said. Investigators also learned that Heckman had pawned some stolen property at a local pawn shop.A search warrant at his home also turned up numerous golf clubs, credit cards, a plasma TV, jewelry and other items.Investigators say they have linked Heckman to at least 20 burglaries and several auto thefts.Heckman is being held without bond at the Jefferson County Detention Center.
