DENVER -- A volunteer for Habitat For Humanity has saved the organization nearly $600,000 since he began volunteering in 1997.Richard Rosenthal is one of thousands of Coloradans who help provide affordable housing. Rosenthal is a master electrician who puts his skills to work for Habitat For Humanity as they work to build houses for those in need."I manage all the electrical work for all the houses -- they'll do 33 houses," he said. "Been doing that for about 10 years."
Habitat is a nonprofit seeking to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness by constructing houses for the underserved."It is not given to them. They have to pay a mortgage," Rosenthal said. "A no-interest mortgage every month."With Rosenthal and his team providing all the electrical work at no charge, Habitat is saved thousands of dollars.Rosenthal has partnered with Habitat on more than 200 homes since 1997."In the time he has volunteered, he has helped save us enough money that we could build seven additional homes over the last 10 years," said Brady Nelson of Habitat for Humanity."I do it because I love volunteering," Rosenthal said."None of this would happen if we didn't have volunteers," Nelson said.
