DENVER -- About 30,000 feet of copper wire was stolen in Weld County Tuesday night, the Weld County Sheriff's Office said.The price of copper has tripled in the last couple of years. Copper is the new hot item for thieves, authorities say.The latest copper theft happened Tuesday around 10 p.m. at a location owned by Union Pacific Railroad north of Fort Lupton.
Weld County Investigators said they have suspects in the case.The increased copper thefts have driven up construction costs and have forced some business owners to change how they operate. Builders said they have to restock their copper supplies and pay to increase site security.
