Patsy Ramsey's Cancer Returns
Mother Of Slain Beauty Queen Has Ovarian Cancer
UPDATED: 2:56 pm MST February 15,
2002
ATLANTA -- The Ramsey family attorney has revealed that doctors diagnosed a recurrence of ovarian cancer in Patsy Ramsey, the mother of slain child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey.
Attorney Lin Wood said Friday the diagnosis came after the 45-year-old Ramsey's annual examination earlier this week in Bethesda, Md.
Ramsey told a reporter she discovered that she had stage four ovarian cancer in July, 1992. She said at the time that she fought the disease for the sake of her two children, Burke and JonBenet."I remember praying on my knees when I had cancer, 'God why did you give me two children when you are going to take me away from them and not be able to raise them?'" Ramsey told a reporter in 2001."I knew that ultimately, they were the real reason to fight the cancer and live," Ramsey said. She had been free of cancer for eight-and-one-half years before doctors noticed the recurrence this week, accoding to a statement issued by Wood.He said doctors are optimistic because the new cancer appears confined to a small area. The attorney said he had hoped Ramsey's health would remain a private matter but has received repeated questions about it from the press.Wood's statement added, "It is unfortunate but now inescapably clear that Mrs. Ramsey's health will be the subject of discussion by some members of the media, including the supermarket tabloids."It has been more than five years since 6-year-old JonBenet was found strangled in the basement of her family's Boulder, Colo. home. Police have yet to charge anyone in her death. The Ramseys live in a suburb of Atlanta.
