Scams About Unclaimed Money On Rise

Colorado Payback Is Legitimate Free Service

POSTED: 2:28 p.m. MST February 8, 2002

Has a stranger ever told you he's found money that belongs to you but you'll have to pay him to get it?

Debra in Idalia did. A California attorney said he found either $76,000 or $760,000 -- depending on how you read this -- that belongs to her.

The letter explained that back in 1944, a deceased relative of hers opened up an account. It's grown over the years and no one's cashed in.

Well, Debra became suspicious and for good reason. The bottom of the letter said that if she doesn't send in her $89 finders fee, the attorney will pass the offer to the next relative on his list.

But if the money really is available you can cash in without paying a cent!

In fact, 800,000 Coloradans have money or property waiting to be claimed. Just pick up the phone and call the great Colorado Payback program at (800) 825-2111.

It's a free service run through the state treasurer's office. To find your name you can also go to the State Treasurer's Web site.
