Wife Turns In Husband In Rape Case
Woman Recognized Quilt Used During Crime
POSTED: 9:51 a.m. MST February 1, 2002
The wife of a Colorado Springs, Colo., man suspected of raping a jogger at a local park is the one who recognized the quilt used in the crime and turned him in.
Details on how police identified the suspect came during a preliminary hearing Thursday for Milton Haures Romero-Camacho, 26. He is charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting a jogger in the Monument Valley Park Dec. 26.
Erica Martinez, recognized the quilt (pictured, left) police found at the scene and called authorities to report her husband as a suspect. The quilt carried a tag that said "Sandy" and "1996."
She also identified her husband in videotape taken by a passer-by in the park minutes before the attack. Martinez said that she was 90 percent sure the man seen on the tape was her husband.
A Monument Valley Park worker also testified during the preliminary hearing and said that he was 80 certain the man he saw grab the victim was Romero--Camacho.
The worker said he was shoveling snow in the park when he heard a woman scream and saw the woman being dragged behind some bushes and heard the sound of clothes ripping. He notified a nearby Colorado Springs police officer and then returned to find the victim bleeding in the park.
The woman who was attacked told police that she was jogging in the park when a man with a knife grabbed her from behind. She said the man forced her onto a quilt, taped her mouth shut and pulled down her pants. The victim said the man started to rape her but became startled and ran away.
Romero-Camacho is being held on $100,000 bond at the El Paso Criminal Justice Center. The judge will announce Monday whether there is enough evidence to order Romero-Camacho to stand trial.
