GREELEY, Colo. -- City leaders are hosting a meeting this Saturday which will focus largely on helping Latinos integrate into the community, now the second fastest growing metro-area in the nation, according to the latest US Census report. In December, the cities of Greeley and Evans received a $10,000 grant from the Colorado Trust Initiative to find a way to help immigrants assimilate. The project is called "Realizing Our Community."Saturday's public forum is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Northridge High School in Greeley. It is expected to be a heated meeting.
Inside Greeley's Los Comales Tortilleria, almost every employee is Hispanic, and store business manager Victoria Zacharko said the reality is those employees need the jobs."Well, employment -- that's basic. I think if you don't have a job you won't have a place to live or a means to provide for your family. They should use this grant to help immigrants find jobs first. Then education," said Zacharko.Zacharko believes the money could be used to establish some type of center where immigrants could go to get integration help and direction. While some criticize this plan, Saturday's event host, Joe Tennessen, believes the community should embrace its diversity."You know, depending on what numbers you look at, they're (the Hispanic community) at least about a third of the population. And in the school system it's probably more like half," said long-time local radio personality Tennessen. The city's goal is to find ways to use the state grant money to best bridge the gap between the dwindling majority and the exploding minority."I think fear (of change) is one of those things that always comes into play in this type of situation. But, I also know that there is a very large segment of the population that would like to see us solve this problem," said Tennessen. The city will provide babysitting, lunch and translators at the meeting.
