AURORA, Colo. -- For the second time since the abandoned baby law has been in effect in Colorado, a metro-area mother has left her newborn in the care of others with no questions asked.
Aurora fire department officials said that the mother and child appeared to be in good condition when the woman dropped off the one-day-old baby Thursday afternoon.
The infant girl was taken to Aurora Medical Center for a check-up before being turned over to Denver social services.
The woman, who declined offers of medical attention, told officials that she would not return for the child. It is unclear where that woman had given birth and where the baby was born.
According to the law, a baby who is less than three days old can be dropped off at a fire station or a hospital without risk of prosecution.
The first parents to take advantage of the abandoned baby law left their child at an Aurora hospital in December. The two 18-year-olds now want their child back, and face a lengthy process to regain custody.
The abandoned baby measure was enacted in 2000 after a baby was left in the
diaper section of a grocery store.
