Man With Alzheimers Lost Twice In Airports

Family Looking For Answers

Family members of an 82 year old Lone Tree man are looking for answers after he became lost during recent flights to and from Mobile, Alabama.

Vance Barber says his father has been diagnosed with Alzheimers and becomes disoriented. For that reason, Barber says specific instructions were given to Delta Airlines for supervision and wheelchair assistance during the trip which included a stop in Atlanta.

Barber says the problems started March 30th when relatives in Mobile called to say the man had not arrived on the scheduled flight. William Barber eventually arrived on a plane three hours later.

"Nobody could tell me why he was put on that other flight," the younger Barber said. He was later told his father was bumped at the connection point in Atlanta due to aircraft weight issues. "The more I think about it, the madder I get," Vance Barber told 7News.

A Delta spokesperson says the matter is being looked in to.

Family members say there was yet another issue as William Barber flew back to Denver Monday evening. Vance Barber says he had a security pass allowing him to meet his father's flight at the gate. Again, the elder Barber was not on the plane.

"That's the worst part," Barber said. "You're in this mad panic because you have no control over the situation."

Barber found his father unharmed at DIA's baggage claim, confused and upset. Barber says he's since learned his father wandered around Denver International for 3 hours. Again at the connection in Atlanta, the man was apparently booked on to an earlier flight without notification to family in Denver. Barber says contact information was given to the airline in the event of emergency or itinerary changes.

Vance Barber says he's contacted everyone from customer service to corporate executives looking for an explanation.

When contacted by 7News, a corporate spokesperson agreed to check in to the issue. Anthony Black said, "We will fully investigate the specifics of what happened to this passenger."

Barber says his father deserves a written apology.
