Affidavit: 3-Year-Old Was Hit More Than 50 Times

Mother Arrested After Daughter's Death

Aurora police said a 3-year-old's injuries are inconsistent with the story they have been given about how the little girl died.

Her mother, Susie Quartey, was arrested Saturday after police responded to a call of a child not breathing.

Police do not know how the girl died, and are not calling her death a homicide. Initial autopsy results were inconclusive and investigators are waiting for toxicology results, which they said could take several weeks.

According to court documents, the girl was struck more than 50 times, although police say none of the blows were serious enough to be life-threatening.

The documents also indicate that Quartey told police she was carrying the girl on her back in a cloth tote when she slipped and fell.

Police said they question Quartey's story. The arrest affidavit notes that there were deep gouge marks on the girl's left thigh.

"It became very apparent that there were some pattern-type wounds on the little girl. We're talking about mostly contusions and bruises, and there were a number of them," said Detective Shannon Lucy of the Aurora Police Department.

Many neighborhood residents learned about the girl's death on Monday.

"That's really terrible. I hate to hear that," said Aurora resident Jane Rose.

"I think that's very sad if that's what happened to that child," said resident Lenell Perry. "No child deserves something like that to happen to them at all."

Crime scene investigators returned to the scene Monday afternoon.

The arrest affidavit says it "appears that the hanger found in the trash was used to inflict numerous blows." It also states the coroner found a wound impression on the girl that matched one of Quartey's shoes, "indicating the victim was also kicked."

Quartey is being held for investigation of second-degree assault and misdemeanor child abuse.
