Timothy Evans Accused In Second Case

A Jefferson County jury is deliberating the case of a former Roman Catholic priest charged with sexually assaulting a teenager 10 years ago.

It's the second trial for 44-year-old Timothy Joseph Evans in two separate cases. The jury deliberated all day Friday until they were dismissed for the weekend at 4 p.m.

Evans is accused of fondling a 16-year-old boy between 1995 and 1997 while he was assigned to a parish in Arvada. Evans is charged with sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

Prosecutors said Evans molested the boy in his private chambers.

Evans was convicted in Fort Collins last month of sexually assaulting a young parishioner. Evans is scheduled to be sentenced in that case in May.

"In this case, obviously we're looking for a guilty verdict. He's already been (convicted) in Fort Collins. He gets sentenced at the end of May. He can get anywhere between 10 years to life. So we already know. What we're trying to do is just make sure that this type of pattern stops. There are records within the church that were not released to authorities. We know that there are other victims out there," said Bob Brancato, a victim's advocate.

Victims advocates said they hope Evans' first conviction last week serves as an example to all victims of sexual abuse that they have nothing to fear when they come forward against members of the clergy.

Evans was removed from the priesthood in 2003.
