CU Gang Rape Case To Go Forward
Police Say Woman Who Alleged Rape Is Willing To Prosecute
POSTED: 9:02 a.m. MST December 20, 2001
A college student who alleged she was sexually
assaulted at a party attended by University of Colorado football
players and recruits is willing to go forward with the case,
university police chief Jim Fadenrect said.
Any delays in the investigation should not be interpreted as
reluctance by the victim, Fadenrect said Wednesday.
Investigators are trying to determine whether charges are
warranted for the student's allegations that she was assaulted by
several people at the off-campus party Dec. 7. Campus police are
leading the investigation because the student approached them
first. Boulder police are assisting.
Quarterback Bobby Pesavento said some players have talked to
authorities about the allegations but he did not know who among his
teammates attended the party.
"Coach (Gary) Barnett is keeping it under wraps," Pesavento
said. "The only time it's been discussed was the day we all found
out about it. Coach Barnett addressed the team about being
responsible and not putting ourselves in situations like that."
The gang rape allegations became public last Wednesday when two co-eds reported they saw the alleged victim being sexually assaulted at the Friday night party. They said they took her to Boulder Community Hospital that night for a rape examination.
Hospital officials would not confirm that she was treated, due to privacy issues, and also said they did not call the police that night.
A source close to the CU football program told the Rocky Mountain News that three of the 11 potential high school recruits visiting Boulder that weekend were at the off-campus party that triggered the investigation.
It was not known how many members of the CU Buffs football team were at the party. Police were told the party featured heavy drinking by those in attendance.
Another source with ties to the program told the Rocky that none of those under investigation are prominent members of the team.
