LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Services were held Monday morning for a high school junior killed in a suspected drunken-driving accident last week. The funeral for 17-year-old Samara Stricklen was held at Bear Creek Evangelical Church in Lakewood and was attended by 400 to 500 people."The love of our daughter pushed us to become better people, wiser, and we cherished who she was," said Stricklen's mother, Michelle Stricklen.
Stricklen died on March 13 when a sport utility vehicle hit the car she was riding in head-on. Investigators said the 16-year-old girl driving the SUV was likely drunk at the time of the crash. Toxicology test results came back Monday, but investigators would not reveal what they were. They did say the level was sufficient to support a DUI charge. The newly licensed driver was also carrying passengers in her vehicle, in violation of her driver's license restrictions. Drivers who get their license at 16 can't have additional juveniles in the car for six months. At the memorial, grieving parents and students wore pink ribbons in memory of Stricklen."I'm wearing it because this whole ordeal has really changed my opinion on alcohol," said a fellow student. "I don't want to make a mistake like that ever."The crash occurred near Alameda and Florida, about a half-mile from Green Mountain High School, where the SUV driver is a student. Stricklen also had been a student there, but had transferred to Bear Creek High School earlier this school year. The SUV driver is being held on $10,000 bond, and is due back in court on Tuesday to find out what charges she will face.A friend of Stricklen, Seth Mutschler, was driving the car she was in. He remains in critical condition at St. Anthony's Central Hospital.Rescue crews said before she died, Stricklen told officers to take care of Mutschler first.
