Gay Slurs Start Fight, Men Say

Derogatory comments about homosexuality started a physical fight between several men in Boulder early Sunday morning, two men told police.

The fight happened around 12:30 a.m. near 10th and Pearl streets after some men made derogatory remarks to two other men about them being homosexual, Boulder police said.

Adam Perez and Eric Schorling, both 21 years old, were arrested in connection with the fight.

A 23-year-old man said he was walking with his arm around his 19-year-old friend when two men behind them began making derogatory remarks. The victim told police he ignored the first comment he believed to be directed at him, but then turned to confront the men after the second comment was made.

Words were exchanged before one of the men came up and punched him, starting the fight, the victim said.

The fight continued until he was able to punch one of the men and stand up, he said. Police arrived and arrested Perez and Schorling.

All men in the fight suffered minor injuries.

Perez faces second-degree assault and bias motivated crime charges, while Schorling faces third-degree assault, bias motivated crime and felony criminal mischief charges. Schorling is accused of breaking one of the men's expensive pair of glasses during the fight.

Both Perez and Schorling are students at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Boulder police said they have no reason to believe the suspects are connected to the alleged hate crime against a lesbian last month.

Schorling and Perez posted $5,000 bonds Sunday afternoon. They are scheduled in court March 22.
