17-Year-Old Driver Is Tyler, Nikko's Classmate

The teenage driver who slammed into two fellow students while they were changing a flat tire on a dark road will be charged with two careless driving charges, 7NEWS reported.

The Weld County District Attorney on Tuesday filed charges against the 17-year-old driver, Michelle Berra. She will be cited for two misdemeanor counts of careless driving resulting in injury.

Tyler and Nikko Landeros each lost both of their legs as a result of the crash, which occurred while the wrestlers were returning from a dance at Berthoud High School.

The charges are misdemeanors that carry a penalty that ranges from 10 days to 1 year in jail and a fine of $100 to $1,000. Berra will be cited by the state patrol and is expected in court on April 17.

Berra's mother took her daughter out of class Tuesday after hearing of the charges.

"I'm beside myself. This was an accident," Berra's mother said. "While I don't want to take anything away from what the boys have been through, this has been tough for us, too."

The boys were changing a flat tire behind their red Isuzu Trooper when they were struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser driven by Berra.

The Colorado State Patrol investigator in this case wrote in a report that the boys' Trooper was stopped in traffic on the southbound lane of County Road 17. The trooper said when it was hit, it rotated 180 degrees and ended up facing north partially out of traffic.

The district attorney's decision to charge Berra occurred on the same day that both Tyler and Nikko returned to school. They attended class for a short time Tuesday.
