BOULDER, Colorado -- About 200 people gathered Friday night to show solidarity and support for the woman who says she was attacked earlier this week by two men -- an attack that police are investigating as a possible hate crime."I think people need to know it's not OK to be assaulting people just because they say they're lesbian or gay," Jean Hodges said. Hodges walked with her husband. Both are members of PFLAG, which stands for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. The Hodges joined the crowd Friday evening in a peaceful march from the Boulder Pride Community Center to Boulder's city hall. Carrying flags and signs, many chanted, "What do we want? Justice. When do we want it? Now!"
Once at city hall, a fellow student from Naropa University read a statement from the 21-year-old victim."I have felt your solidarity at this time of pain and know how much support and love of family, friends and community can make a difference," the student read. The woman was attacked very early Wednesday morning. The victim told police she met two men on the Pearl Street Mall hours after a Mardi Gras celebration. The men asked the woman if they could stay at her home overnight. At some point, police say the conversation turned sexual and when she rebuffed their advances, telling them that she was gay, she was punched and kicked.Police hope surveillance video released Friday afternoon will help locate her attackers. The nonprofit group Boulder Pride organized Friday's march and rally.
