Berthoud To Host Tournament In Honor Of Injured Wrestlers

A community plans to come together this weekend to show its support for two Berthoud teens who each had both their legs amputated after a car crash last month.

Tyler Carron and Nikko Landeros are recovering from their injuries and inspired their fellow Berthoud High School wrestling teammates at a hospital visit with their positive attitudes.

The teens were changing a tire on a dark road near the high school when a fellow student driving an SUV crashed into the boys, pinning them between the two vehicles.

The teammates said they are dedicating this weekend's wrestling tournament to Carron and Landeros, who they said have been the driving force behind the team's newfound strength, spirit and motivation.

Berthoud High School will host the tournament and will sport fundraising T-shirts with the injured teens' names printed on them.

The teammates said they hope Carron, who was released from Denver Health Medical Center earlier this week, will show up Saturday to cheer them on.

Several fundraisers are planned for the weekend to help Carron and Landeros and their families.

A mobile blood drive at Berthoud High will be held Saturday.

On Sunday night, a silent auction and comedy show will be held at Thompson Valley High School.

Contractors are donating their time and skills to renovate the homes of Carron and Landeros.

"He can come with the wheelchair from the house, be able to turn it, and then follow down on a proper slope," contractor Robert Crowe said. "I had it so that Tyler had a normal reentry into his life here -- being able to use the toilet and the shower."

"It renews my hope about this world to see the way the community has stepped up," Berthoud's wrestling coach, Mike Shearer, said.
