A soldier from Highlands Ranch was injured last week in Iraq when an improvised explosive device went off, his family said.

Matthew Mobley, 20, has shrapnel injuries and underwent surgery for his injuries, his father said. However, his injuries do not appear life-threatening.

Mobley is stationed in Fort Bragg, N.C.

He and his identical twin brother, Ryan Mobley, who is currently serving with the Marines, graduated from Highlands Ranch High School in 2004.

Students at Highlands Ranch High School expressed their thanks and gratefulness to both brothers serving in the military.

"I can relate to them because my dad is a Marine and I can feel his parents' pain when he's gone and how much they miss him and how worried they can be," said senior Morgan Varney.

Highlands Ranch High School teacher Tandy Ortiz's students have written more than 300 letters to the Mobley brothers.

"I started writing to Matt and Ryan and then I thought my students can write to them," Ortiz said.

Their letters mean more to the boys than ever since Matt Mobley was injured.

"He's not just over there. He's actually over there working for our country," said freshman Katie Dawkins.

"I'm just glad he's OK," said senior Ryan Mazur. "I admire his courage for staying out there."

"I just wanted to let you know I am thinking about you and you are in my prayers. Please feel better," Varney said.

Matt Mobley's father said his son's surgery was successful and he will now stay in Iraq as he recovers from his injuries.
