Teammates Make Hospital Visit To Berthoud Wrestlers

During the three weeks since two Berthoud High School wrestlers each lost both their legs in a car crash, the community has rallied together to support the boys and their families, both emotionally and financially.

The families of Tyler Carron and Nikko Landeros are receiving more than $80,000 from one event. Several citizens have put on silent auctions and fundraisers to help with the boys' medical expenses.

A dinner served by Biaggi's restaurant last Monday, where Carron's brothers both worked, was a huge success and raised some $82,000

"Their courage has given us courage," said Berthoud High student body President Becky Pope. "Their fight has given us fight, and I really truly believe that's why we have pulled together so well."

On Friday, a group of 20 wrestling teammates and coaches saw the smiling and upbeat faces of Carron and Landeros at Denver Health Medical Center where the boys are recovering.

At Monday night's game the team will wear special headgear in honor of Carron and Landeros, as they have for every game since the Jan. 15 crash that nearly killed the boys.

"They're doing good and we'll wrestle hard for them," said teammate Jared Wikre. "It's just weird when the captains go out and Tyler's not with them."

When Wikre visited his teammates, he said he couldn't help but notice their arms were injured as well.

"One of his arms is, I think, cracked a little bit, so he has to use his chair with one hand," Wikre said.

Berthoud High School is hosting a regional wrestling competition this weekend. The school considered moving it to another location after the crash, but after talking with the wrestlers, Berthoud's coach said he believes this will be another phase of the healing process.
