DA Needs More To Determine Charges In Berthoud Crash

Tyler Carron, Nikko Landeros Still Recovering

The district attorney investigating whether to press charges against the teenage driver accused of crashing her car into fellow Berthoud students -- severing their legs -- said more information is needed before he proceeds with charges.

The Colorado State Patrol investigator presented the evidence to the Larimer County district attorney on Jan. 29 for review and met with prosecutors on Feb. 2.

District Attorney Larry Abrahamson requested more information and further investigation into other areas, the CSP said, although they didn't elaborate.

CSP spokesman said Ron Watkins said investigators are most likely to recommend charges of two counts of careless driving causing serious bodily injury, a misdemeanor.

The hope is that a final CSP report will be ready sometime next week, the CSP said.

Tyler Carron and Nikko Landeros are both recovering at Denver Health Medical Center after their legs were amputated at their knees.

On Jan. 15, the two boys were trying to change a flat tire on a dark rural road when a 17-year-old girl's car struck them, pinning them between the two vehicles. She is not being identified because of her age.

There has been an outpouring of support from the community after the crash. Several fundraisers have been held for the boys.

Carron and Landeros are both competitive wrestlers and doctors credit their quick recovery in part because they are in peak physical condition. Doctors said the teens will undergo rehabilitation together and that their competitive drive may help speed up the process.

Berthoud High School will host a regional wrestling competition this weekend. The school considered moving it to another location after the incident but after talking with the wrestlers, the coach believes this will be another phase of the healing process.

Additional Information:
  • A radio station out of Craig and Moffat County high school wrestlers are kicking off a fundraiser for Tyler and Nikko. They are encouraging all high school wrestling programs in Colorado to collect money at their meets and tournaments for the Berthoud teens. For more, go to BerthoudCares.com.
  • Money is also being collected for the "Tyler Carron and Nikko Landeros Fund" by Centennial Bank of the West. Donations may be deposited at any branch or mailed to Bank of the West, 1610 Hover St., Longmont, 80501. Deposits can also be made at the Berthoud branch located at 415 Mountain Ave. 80513.
