DENVER -- The new state-of-the art addition to the Denver Art Museum is undergoing repairs after two leaks have been found. The leak they are currently repairing started in late October, just after the new $110 million building opened. The addition promised a state-of-the-art, climate-controlled building that could lure world-famous exhibitions when it opened, but then water started dripping into the atrium.
"The primary suspect is the cross beam covers on the steeply sloping atrium roof," said Andrea Fulton of the Denver Art Museum. "You build a new building and you learn as you go. I think we're lucky we learned about this early on while we still have a full team of architects and builders on site."Crews are working on waterproofing, but the leak could lead to bigger problems."We've obviously been monitoring it extremely closely," Fulton said. The snow has slowed down repairs and two weeks ago another leak was found in a gallery on the fourth floor. The leak seems to have stopped, however, a little bit of water could cause great damage to paintings. Some art lovers say give it time."Every great architect's buildings leak. It's not really a fault of the building," said Denver tourist Elizabeth Mitchell. "These things just happen."But others are worried how much a leaky roof could cost long-term."Yeah, that is kind of a concern. I don't know how much money they're burning through on this, but it can't be cheap," said Denver resident Jim Pinamont. There has been a lot of discussion with architects and builders and the museum said the city of Denver will not foot the bill.
