Parker Student Arrested In Fetus Death Case

Gunnison County Investigators Execute Search Warrant At Western State College

POSTED: 5:41 am MST January 30, 2007

An 18-year-old girl from Parker was under arrest Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree murder in connection with a death investigation in Gunnison County.

Reports have said the death in question is that of a fetus or newborn, though police have not confirmed the reports.

The Sheriff's Office said the death occurred in late 2006, but would not release further details. An autopsy would have been conducted to determine if the fetus was alive or stillborn and the results would have been given to investigators.

The Gunnison Police Department said a search warrant conducted at a residence in Gunnison led to the arrest of Addie Kubisiak in Parker, Colo. The search warrant was executed in Kubisiak's college dorm room on the Western State College campus where the freshman was living.

Police said the alleged victim was found in a dorm room in Robidoux Hall.

Kubisiak was arrested and booked into the Douglas County Detention Center on Monday.

Early rumors that a murder had taken place on campus caused some panic among students. Western administrators issued a campus-wide e-mail that said the investigation did not involve safety issues for students.

Later reports spread that the murder investigation focused on that of a fetus.

"We want to make sure students are clearly aware that never at any time, either prior to or during this investigation, was their safety in jeopardy," said Chief Greg Anderson of the Gunnison County Police Department.

When asked if an autopsy had been conducted, an investigator said whenever there is a death investigation all options are explored to determine the exact cause of the death.

Anderson said police investigators have been releasing very limited information because of the sensitivity of the case.

The dean of students at WSC, Sherryl Hall-Peterson, said she is focused on providing whatever assistance is necessary to students at the college during this difficult time.

"It's a small campus. We care about one another. We have over 900, almost 1,000 students living on campus," said Hall-Peterson. "They live in close quarters and know each other well and communicate well and that serves you well in a crisis like this."

"I was blown away today when I heard. My heart goes out to her," said Kubisiak's friend Lawrence Valdez. "I'm really torn up about this. She doesn't deserve this. I wish there was somebody out there who would have helped her before it got to this."

The administration at WSC said it expresses its sympathy to Kubisiak, her family and all those associated with the tragedy.

Kubisiak is a 2006 graduate of Ponderosa High School in Parker.
