Man's Fate In Road Rage Trial In Hands Of Jury

Jurors Hear Closing Arguments In Jason Reynolds Trial

Colorado's first road-rage case where a man is on trial for first-degree murder has been put in the hands of an Arapahoe County jury.

Jason Reynolds is accused of causing the deaths of two drivers in a crash on E-470 on Nov. 8, 2005.

On Wednesday, the prosecution and the defense gave jurors very different versions of what happened in the crash.

During closing arguments Reynolds' attorney said there was no physical evidence that Reynolds actually caused the crash, while prosecutors reminded the jury that Reynolds admitted hitting the brakes, causing the driver behind him to swerve.

"They died because of the defendant's actions," said prosecutor Karen Pearson. "He killed them because of his driving conduct (and) his absolute disregard for human life."

Reynolds' vehicle was linked to several incidents of dangerous driving earlier in 2005. Prosecutors said he employed the same reckless style of driving the afternoon of the crash that killed 55-year-old Kelvin Norman and 35-year-old Greg Boss.

Norman was driving behind Reynolds when he lost control and crossed the median into oncoming traffic, hitting Boss head-on. Norman and Boss were both killed instantly.

Reynolds' attorney argued it was Norman's turn of the wheel that sent his car spinning, not because his client slammed on the brakes.

"Are we defending him as a great driver? No...this is not a swoop in front and slam on the brakes thing," said defense attorney Phil Chernern.

Chernern asked the jurors to honor his client's presumption of innocence. Meanwhile, prosecutors told jurors to not look at the case in terms of sympathy for the victims, but in terms of what was in Reynolds' heart.

If convicted, Reynolds could face life in prison.
