A former Brighton Charter School teacher accused of having sex with a 17-year-old male student was in Weld County court Monday for a preliminary hearing.

Carrie McCandless is charged with sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

The district attorney has offered a plea deal and her attorney is considering it, 7NEWS reported.

Her attorney, Michael Trani, asked for more time to consider the plea deal and discuss it with his client, and he was granted that request. He has also subpoenaed the alleged victim in the case and the prosecution has made a motion to quash that request.

The district attorney alleges that McCandless carried on a romance with the student, and at one point exchanging 76 text messages with him in one day. She's also accused of providing alcohol to him while on a field trip to Estes Park in October.

The arrest affidavit said McCandless and the boy began text messaging each other before the field trip. In one of the text messages, the boy wrote that he was cold and she responded, "Just pretend you're here sweating with me."

The affidavit also said McCandless told the boy she was having problems in her marriage and that the two professed their love to each other.

McCandless is married to the principal of Brighton Charter School. She was fired from the charter school after allegations of the teacher-student affair surfaced.

McCandless is due back in court on Feb. 22.
