BERTHOUD, Colo. -- Two teenage boys who were trying to change a flat tire on the side of the road have each had at least one of their legs amputated after they were struck and pinned by a fellow student who had slammed into them with her car.The two victims, identified as 17-year-olds Tyler Carron and Nikko Landeros, are in serious condition at Denver Health Medical Center. The teen driver faces several charges. She has not been identified. All are students at Berthoud High School.
The Colorado State Patrol said that the incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. Monday on Larimer County Road 17.Carron, Landeros, and two of their female friends were returning home from a formal dance at the school when they got a flat tire. They pulled their 1999 Isuzu Trooper on the side of the road and while the boys were standing outside trying to remove the spare tire from the tailgate, a Toyota Land Cruiser careened into them, pinning them between the two vehicles, the CSP said. Two teenage girls, who were sitting in the Isuzu Trooper, were not injured, and neither was the driver of the Toyota, the CSP said. The victims' friends and the principal at Berthoud High School told 7NEWS that the boys' injuries are so serious that both legs of one of the boys have been amputated and one leg of the other boy was removed. That boy's other leg may also have to be removed. The small community of Berthoud High School, which only has 670 students, is in shock. Carron and Landeros are popular students who were on the football and wrestling teams. The principal told 7NEWS that both juniors hoped to get athletic scholarships to college."They were young men who were counting on athletic scholarships to get into college, so their lives have been changed drastically," said Berthoud High School principal Len Sherman. The teens were coming home from the Black and White dance, a formal dance meant to raise money for their senior year, when the crash occurred. The school will have crisis counselors on campus Wednesday, the first day back at school since Friday. Students had no classes on Monday and Tuesday because of the Martin Luther King holiday.Sherman said he has attended far too many funerals during his 28 years at Berthoud High School. Two years ago he attended the funeral for a wrestler from Berthoud High who was killed in a car crash in Weld County. The CSP said alcohol or drugs are not suspected in the crash. The cause of the cause remains under investigation. There were no adverse weather or road conditions at the time of the crash, the CSP said."Nor any other weather conditions. It wasn't foggy or snowing or anything at the time of the accident," Sgt. Bob Rood of the CSP said. The crash was initially investigated by Berthoud Police Department, who later determined that the crash was outside their jurisdiction and turned the investigation over to the CSP.Additional Information:
