Elizabeth Teacher Advised On Sex Assault Charge

Darcie Esson Accused Of Sexual Relations With High School Student

POSTED: 5:06 am MST January 12, 2007

An Elizabeth High School teacher was advised Wednesday that she faces a charge of felony sexual assault on a child while in a position of trust for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old football player.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by 7News, Darcie Elizabeth Esson, 33, an English teacher at Elizabeth High School, was in a Glenwood Springs hotel room when the incident allegedly occurred last November. The high school football team was staying there after playing Rifle High School in a playoff game.

The teacher was accompanying the team on the trip, along with her 4- and 8-year-old children, having finalized her divorce the day before, the affidavit alleged.

The football player snuck out of a hotel he and the team were staying in and went to Esson's room in a nearby hotel, according to the affidavit. Investigators allege the two had sex while Esson's children and a baby sitter slept in the same room.

Esson has retained Pamela Mackey for legal counsel. Mackey represented basketball star Kobe Bryant when he was facing rape accusations in 2003. That case was eventually dismissed.

She remains free on $25,000 bond and has been suspended from the school.
