Broncos Add $100,000 To Reward In Darrent Williams Case

Man Arrested In Connection To Case Won't Be Released Today

UPDATED: 7:02 pm MST January 10, 2007

Members of the Denver Broncos football team are offering an additional $100,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and filing of charges against anyone involved in the killing of their friend and colleague Darrent Williams, police said Wednesday.

The Broncos' reward is in addition to the $2,000 reward offered by Crime Stoppers, police said.

Williams was shot in the neck and killed New Year's Day at approximately 2 a.m. He was traveling in a stretch Hummer limousine in the area of 11th Avenue and Speer Boulevard when several shots were fired into his limo from another vehicle.

"Investigators know there are people in our community who have valuable information that would assist them in solving this crime," Denver police said. "Anyone who may have witnessed this crime or has any information which may help to solve this case or any other investigation is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867)."

The Crime Stoppers line is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Callers can remain anonymous when they call the Crime Stoppers number and still receive the award.

Willie Clark To Remain In Jail

In the meantime, a man being held in connection to Williams' shooting death will not be released from jail on Wednesday.

Willie Clark is being held on a parole violation.

Police used an old traffic ticket and a parole violation to pick up Clark last Friday and to question him about the shooting. However, Clark's attorney claims the traffic ticket belongs to Clark's cousin and that Clark should be released Wednesday when the situation is cleared up.

But the parole board said Clark was not living where he told his parole officer he would be living and he now can be held for another 30 days, or possibly two months, on a technical violation of his parole, 7NEWS Investigator Tony Kovaleski said.

Relatives said he had not been living at the home that had he listed since Thanksgiving.

Denver police have said very little about his possible role in the Williams' shooting, only that they believe he has pertinent information that could help with the investigation.

Clark's attorney said he can't say either way whether Clark has cooperated with the police questioning. He told Kovaleski that it's a double-edged sword. If he said Clark was cooperating, there is a chance of reprisals in his community but if he said Clark was not cooperating with police it would appear that he had something to hide.

"The only thing I can tell you is that he's frustrated. But we'll wait this out and straighten this out," said Clark's attorney, Michael Andre.

Clark's cousin appeared in court Wednesday to clear up the situation about the ticket. When he said that he was the one who was ticketed for driving while their license is under suspension, he was taken away in handcuffs.

Clark spent a year in state prison on auto theft charges. His parole violation is the kind of violation that could send him back to state prison, Kovaleski said.

"Clearly, police have leverage. They could say to Clark, 'Either you start talking or you're going back to state prison,'" Kovaleski said.

When asked where Clark was on New Year's Eve, Andre said, "There's nothing I can talk about at this point."

Clark has another hearing in Denver District Court next week on the issue of the mistaken identity for the traffic ticket.
