FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A former Colorado State University football player is being ordered to do community service and serve unsupervised probation for his role in a bank-fraud scheme.Micah Lamar Crews, of Englewood, pleaded guilty in Larimer County court Tuesday to theft and forgery. He received a two-year deferred sentence in addition to 60 hours of community service and two years of unsupervised probation. He must also pay nearly $2,600 in restitution.
Crews is one of eight people arrested last year for allegedly depositing forged checks into other people's accounts, and then using stolen debit cards to buy money orders with those deposits. He and two other CSU football players were kicked off the team after they were arrested. The fraud ring operated between September 2005 and July 2006. The group was accused of stealing at least $500 but less than $15,000.The district attorney's office spokeswoman Linda Jensen said former cornerback Robert Herbert was given a two-year deferred sentence, ordered to perform 150 hours community service and pay $6,700 restitution.Former defensive lineman Brian Abata pleaded guilty to charges of theft and forgery. He's scheduled to be sentenced Thursday.Abata was a freshman defensive lineman from Denver. Robert Herbert was a senior cornerback from Alta Loma, Calif; and Crews was a freshman defensive back.Abata played high school football at Thomas Jefferson in Denver. Crews played at Kent Denver. Also named in the indictments were Daniel Foster, Calee Jo Chleboun, Preston Garcia and Tramell McGill. Garcia, Foster and McGill were students or former students.
