WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- As a parent, you probably want to know details about weapons found at your child's school. For the past three months, 7NEWS Investigates has analyzed dangerous weapons reports from hundreds of metro-area schools. But one school district is keeping its reports secret.
Tony Kovaleski: Until parents can see the records, until we can see the records, we can't answer the question of whether the district is trying to hide something.Federal law requires school districts to protect the names of minors. We did not want the students' names. We wanted to know the type of weapon, how they were found and what were the circumstances. One district refused to answer those questions for parents and the public. The Cherry Creek School district gave us its dangerous weapons reports. The Denver Public Schools district gave us its dangerous weapons reports. And so did Jefferson County. Report after report, detailing what happened with weapons on school campuses.Koveleski: Why show us the letters?Rick Kauffman, spokesman for Jeffco schools: To help portray the best story accurately about the weapon incidents at Molholm Elementary. But one district decided to keep its reports a secret. Westminster's Adams 50 school district had 26 dangerous weapons incidents last year.Comparatively, only DPS had more weapons per thousand students.Another concern: according to reports filed with the state, the Adams 50 district referred none of its dangerous weapons incidents to police.
We wanted to know why so many reports? And why were students not referred to police? The district's superintendent George Strafas declined our request for an on-camera interview. We also asked to speak to the district's spokesperson. For more than two weeks, she said she was too busy -- not available.Without an interview, we asked to review paperwork -- reports detailing the district's 26 dangerous weapons incidents.Once again, the Adams 50 school district declined our request. But this time, the answer came in this faxed letter from an attorney hired by the district. He wrote, "...the district is not willing to commit its resources to the task..."William Moloney, Colorado Commissioner of Education: Frankly, if you are not giving people information, a natural conclusion that's going to be drawn by a lot of folks is, do you got something to hide?
We brought the issue to the top -- Colorado's Commissioner of Education William Moloney.William Moloney, Colorado Commissioner of Education: You have to ask, if Jeffco can do it, if Denver can do it, it must be legal because they have lawyers too.So while DPS provided details of a Tech 9 mm automatic weapon on a campus, while Cherry Creek provided details of a colt 45 and bullets on a campus, and while Jeffco shared the facts of an elementary school students "threatening to kill someone" -- Westminster's Adams 50 school district used an attorney and an excuse to prevent parents and the press from knowing the real story.Kovaleski: If you were the superintendent of the Adams 50 Westminster school district and you had 26 dangerous weapons reports that a reporter wanted to look at, would you turn them over?William Moloney, Colorado Commissioner of Education: UmmKovaleski: Yes or no?Moloney: Yes.There are more questions. The district says it referred 13 of the 26 weapons incidents to police. We checked with law enforcement. Their records show they handled only five dangerous weapons cases. What happened to the other eight?Once again the superintendent declined to answer questions on camera.
