Man Sentenced In Mailbox ID Theft Scheme

POSTED: 7:24 pm MST December 14, 2006
UPDATED: 8:16 pm MST December 14, 2006

One of three people accused in an identity theft and forgery scheme was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison.

Sean Thomas Montgomery, 29, in October pleaded guilty to theft. He was the last of three people accused in the case to be sentenced.

Police said the trio worked together to steal mail from people's mailboxes that contained checking account numbers and legitimate checks. Most of the thefts occurred in Lakewood, Morrison and Evergreen.

Police said they then forged the checks and used bank account routing numbers to create phony checks on a computer. A total of 100 counterfeit checks were cashed at banks, casinos, Wal-Mart and other businesses.

Constance Kay Mathews, 42, and Mathew James Sweeney, 41, each pleaded guilty to theft and were each sentenced to six years in prison earlier this year.
