COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A new report concludes that "friendly fire" was behind the injuries to a Colorado Springs SWAT officer and police dog as authorities tried to capture a bank robbery suspect. The report, released Wednesday, showsed two officers were justified in using deadly force against the suspect outside a home on Nov. 8, but that the gunfire accidentally injured two colleagues. District attorney's investigator Larry Martin said SWAT Officer Rafael Chanza was hurt by a bullet that went through suspect William Gregg's arm, and exited his wrist. Martin said the slug shattered when it hit Chanza's bullet-resistant vest, causing superficial arm wounds.
The German shepherd police dog named "Bosco" was shot in the head by police officers. He survived, but lost an eye and had to be retired.Gregg faces three counts of aggravated robbery with a gun, and two counts of first-degree assault. He's being held on $250,000 bond.
