LONE TREE, Colo. -- Lone Tree police are investigating the thefts of several stolen cars in a south metro neighborhood. In the course of less than a week, nearly a dozen homes were hit and a total of nine homeowners had their cars stolen from the Heritage Hills area of Lone Tree.In some cases the victims had left their garage doors open overnight and in other cases some left their cars in their driveways unlocked. Some victims had even left their keys in the ignition of their cars.
"My daughter Britney had her I-Pod and the attachment to the I-Pod stolen," said victim Sandra Griffin. Two arrests were made in the case Wednesday evening, Detective Todd Pachello of the Lone Tree Police Department said. Pachello said they expected more arrests to be made later in the week.A lot of Heritage Hills residents said they were surprised to learn that nearly a dozen homeowners were ripped off in their gated community that is only two minutes away from the Lone Tree Police Department."My daughter's friends are saying, 'That's what you get for living in a gated community,'" said Griffin. "You take advantage of it. You leave your cars out there, you don't lock them.""A lot of the vehicles were left unlocked, they left their keys in their cards," said Pachello.Pachello said some victims had left personal identification information such as their Social Security cards, driver's licenses and family photos inside their cars as well as clientele information from businesses. Some homeowners had their items rummaged through and nothing was taken. Others are missing their garage door openers and the crooks entered their homes."It's always concerning when you have people who are brazen enough to enter home when people are sleeping -- that they could go to other extremes. They could be armed with deadly weapons and so forth," said Pachello."We left lights on last night just to be safe," said Griffin.Police advise all residents to keep their garage doors closed, lock their car doors, leave some lights on and remove valuables from vehicles.Lone Tree police said they have recovered two of the nine stolen cars.During the day, the gates are left open in the neighborhood. Some of the residents admitted the gated community may have given them a false sense of security.
