Members of Denver’s Ethiopian community came together Saturday to mourn a mother of five children.

Alganesh Meshesha was stabbed to death a week ago as she walked home from work near the area of Colfax and Ivy.

"She was very nice, very kind, and I hope everybody understands that," 12-year-old Samuel Kassey said of his mother.

The suspect, identified by Denver police as Shimondi Gabreselassie, faces a first-degree murder charge. Family members told 7NEWS Gabreselassie has been taken into custody in Los Angeles.

A religious service for Meshesha is scheduled for Sunday.

A fund has been set up at US Bank locations. Anyone wishing to make a donation should ask for the Alganesh Fund Relief.
