DENVER -- A woman who was the victim of a 2005 attempted murder incident was shot to death in a Cherry Creek neighborhood overnight just days before the trial of the suspect charged in the case was set to begin.

Kalonniann Louisa Clark, 28, was shot in the 100 block of South Harrison Street, near Ellsworth, about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Neighbor David Harmon says he was watching TV when he heard the shots. "It was two or three initially, then there was a pause, then there was another one," Harmon said.

Alerted by a 911 caller, police said they found Clark lying just outside the front door of her north Cherry Creek home.

Police say the victim was inside her home, when two unknown males forced their way into the home. "She was attempting to flee when she was shot," said Denver Police Detective Virginia Quinones.

Clark was transported to Denver Health Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, police said.

According to Denver District Attorney's office, Clark was one of two women shot at in a June 2005 attempted murder incident. Brian Hicks was charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder in connection with the incident. Hicks is also charged with illegal discharge of a weapon and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

Clark was scheduled to be a witness in Hicks' trial, which was scheduled for Monday.

The prosecution and the defense in Hicks' case had a pre-trial conference scheduled for Thursday. But in light of the recent shooting, both the pre-trial and the trial have been rescheduled for a few months.

Police are investigating to determine if the recent shooting and Hicks' case are connected.
