School Board To Discuss Charter School Sex Scandal

School District 27-J is trying to get to the bottom of a sex scandal at Brighton Charter School.

The school board is scheduled to meet with the charter board Monday night to go over the contract between the school and the district.

The district said the charter school may be in violation of its contract.

The superintendent said no decisions will be made at the meeting, but he told 7NEWS a few weeks ago that the school board can do anything from admonishing the charter school board to revoking their contract.

Brighton Charter School has been in the spotlight since one of its teachers was accused of sexually assaulting a student.

Carrie McCandless has been charged with sexual assault by a person in a position of trust. She is the wife of Brighton Charter School's principal. She was later fired from her position at the school.

Charter Board president David Mundy resigned last week after accusations that he tried to cover up the scandal.

"I know the people involved and I definitely don't think the charter school's contract should be revoked," said parent Nikki McCorkle.

"I don't have children who go to that school, but I certainly think they've done some positive things from what I've heard and I think that would be a terrible injustice," said Celia McConkey.

Some people said the district should step up and play a bigger role in the handling the situation.

"I don't think the children should be punished but I think the district should step in more and be more active in the way the school is run and don't think there would be nearly as many problems," said Brighton resident Catherine Matteo.

While the superintendent said it is unlikely the school board will revoke the school's charter, he did say there could be a timetable that comes out of the meeting.

McCandless is scheduled to appear in Larimer County Court on Tuesday.
