The man involved in the hit-and-run crash that killed a mother and two small children went to court Friday for a formal advisement of the charges against him.

Lawrence Trujillo was formally charged this week with driving under the influence, vehicular homicide, assault, and leaving the scene of an accident.

On Friday, the judge advised him of the charges.

Trujillo's attorney came close to apologizing for the crash outside the courtroom.

"Everybody involved with this case feels an enormous amount of shock and disbelief and sympathy for everybody that's involved in this case," said attorney Robert Bernhardt.

Trujillo is accused of killing Rebecca Bingham and her children, 4-year-old Macie and 2-year-old Garrison, while they were crossing the street.

The children's father, Frank Bingham, was also hit. He is recovering.

His family sent a statement on Friday to "offer heartfelt thanks to the Denver community for all of the prayers and support we have received. From the many friends, pastors, police officers, and medical staff who gave up sleep to be with us and went out of their way to assist in every possible manner, to those of you who grieved silently with us from afar.

"Whether we spoke with you personally, heard accounts of your expressions of sadness over our loss, or simply felt the greatness of your prayers, we appreciate you all. Thank you to those of you who provided meals and flowers to feed our bodies and our spirits, and those of you who made contributions to the Bingham memorial library and memorial fund. Thank you to so many of you who took time out of your lives to celebrate Becca, Macie and Garrison’s lives with us at the visitation and the memorial. Thank you to the many well-wishers who were not able to join us but were with us in spirit. We have truly felt blessed by your presence and pray that the Holy Spirit will bring us all comfort. "
