DENVER -- Denver election workers were still counting votes Sunday. They have about 18,000 absentee ballots to count as a result of computer and equipment problems from the election. They also have 3,000 provisional ballots that won't be counted until Monday.
More than 49,000 absentee ballots have been counted so far. About 3,000 provisional ballots won't be counted until Monday. Provisional ballots are usually cast by voters whose eligibility is in question. Denver police have been helping sort the ballots because of tighter new election security rules. The Denver Post reported the Denver Election Commission's technology chief Anthony Rainey has been placed on administrative investigative leave following the election day problems. Some voters had to wait in line for hours on Tuesday. The delays were blamed in part on a computer system used to check voter registration.City officials have said Rainey ignored their warnings about potential problems.
