Felony Charges Recommended Against Female Teacher In Sex Case

Probe Involves Student Trip To YMCA Camp

Felony charges will be recommended against a Brighton Charter High School teacher after a student trip to Estes Park, police said Thursday.

The police said that they believe English teacher Carrie McCandless, who is also the wife of the principal at Brighton Charter High School, had an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old male student on the trip.

Police recommended to the Larimer County District Attorney that she be charged with sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

7News first reported the story on Nov. 3, but there were few details available at the time.

McCandless was the chaperone on the student trip that took place in October at the YMCA Camp in Estes Park, according to the Brighton Blade newspaper.

"Police are trying to determine if the teacher's relationship with the student constitutes a violation of Colorado statutes concerning sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and contributing to the delinquency of a minor," read a statement issued by Brighton police on Nov. 3.

McCandless has resigned her position at the school, school attorney Bill Bethke told the newspaper. Her husband, Principal Chris McCandless, was not under investigation, Bethke said.

Investigators from Brighton and the Larimer Sheriff's Office met Thursday to compare the findings of their investigation.

The school was also expected to send out a letter to parents Thursday, "explaining as much as we can legally what is going on at the school," read a statement posted on the newspaper Web site by David Mundy Sr., chairman of the charter school’s board of directors.

"I invite any parent to call me or any other board member with their questions or comments. We will be willing to give what information we can," he said.
