DENVER -- A Denver company has begun selling an anthrax decontamination foam to the public, 7NEWS reported.

Modec, Inc., wasn't going to offer its MDF decontamination foam to the general public until January.

But after demonstrating how the non-toxic spray can be used by regular people in emergency situations, the company has been flooded with orders for the $30 bottles.

On the first day alone, 320 people ordered bottles of MDF spray, and Modec was filling 500 waiting list orders from the week before, 7NEWS reported.

The Modec formula is still waiting for FDA approval to be used on skin, but it's already been approved for emergency use on equipment or packages -- like mail -- that may be tainted with chemical or biological warfare agents, 7NEWS reported.

"Anthrax is invisible to the eye, it could be red powder, black powder, white powder," Dan Stocking of the Littleton police said.

Since the first anthrax case in south Florida that killed a man, there have been more than 40 real exposures to anthrax in the United States and countless false-alarms or hoaxes.

But it's impossible to know immediately if a suspicious item is a prank.

That is why Modec's president and CEO, Brian Kalamanka, has decided to start selling MDF spray to the general public now, instead of waiting until January.

"If you feel you've got contamination, and it's right in front of you, you want a means to be able to do something. That's the message I've been receiving from people around the country," Kalamanka said.

The solution was created in the government's Sandia National Lab, where researchers were asked to come up with something strong enough to neutralize chemical and biological agents but gentle enough to protect the environment.

Modec already has a federal contract to produce MDF for the military and first responders.

While individuals can only buy the spray form, the military and first-responders can also buy it as a fog. Kalamanka said that form of MDF proved safe on electronics after three applications.

"We had telephone, calculator, lap top computer, open so circuitry is exposed," he said.

The Englewood Fire Department used it last week to decontaminate their equipment during the Parker post office scare. Thursday, they went to buy 20 more gallons of it.

Now, residents can also use it in emergency situations.

"This is a quick way to suppress a suspect package," Kalamanka said.

Modec is only selling the MDF foam through its Web site. One bottle of the product costs $29.95.

Those who were already on the company's waiting list for January will be sent an e-mail with an offer to buy the product now, according to 7NEWS.

Toxicology experts warn to keep anthrax fears in perspective.

"Just because somebody gets a piece of junk mail at home doesn't mean it contains any poison of any sort," Dr. Al Bronstein of the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center said.

Since the anthrax scares, Modec has quadrupled its production of the MDF formula to keep up with demand.

Modec was also negotiating to help clean up the tainted buildings in Florida and New York where anthrax was discovered.
