Storm Packed With Moisture

Snowpack Above Normal

The wet, heavy storm that moved in Thursday morning, walloped much of the metro area and mountains, and then moved out, brought with it a lot of moisture, said 24/7 Chief Meteorologist Mike Nelson.

"This was the single largest event we've had, in terms of moisture, in a year," said Nelson.

Most of Colorado saw several inches of snow, and considering its widespread coverage and the storm's water content, this was the biggest storm in terms since October 2005, Nelson said.

And the snow was a lot wetter and heavier than normal. Typically, 10 inches of snow is equivalent to 1 inch of water, but this snow had a higher moisture content so 1 inch of water could be squeezed from 8.5 inches of snow from Thursday's storm.

The storm was also great news for Colorado ski resorts. Breckenridge and Keystone received up to two feet of new snow and that means Keystone will open a week earlier than planned on Nov. 3.

Not to mention what the storm did for the Colorado snowpack.

Here are figures as of Oct. 26, with percentages of the 30-year average:

Statewide: 207 percent.

Gunnison Basin: 200 percent.

Upper Rio Grande Basin: 159 percent.

San Miguel-Dolores-Animas-San Juan Basin: 130 percent.

Arkansas Basin: 210 percent.

Colorado Basin: 227 percent.

North Platte Basin: 206 percent.

South Platte Basin: 273 percent.

Yampa-White River Basin: 235 percent.
