DENVER -- A Conifer, Colo., couple didn't quite make it to the hospital Tuesday for the delivery of their baby.Andrew and Joanne Mihlstin were trying to get to St. Joseph Hospital in northeast Denver when the baby decided they should make a detour at about 5:30 a.m., according to Kim Kobel of Exempla Healthcare. The couple stopped after seeing a security car at the Auraria campus and the security guard on duty delivered the baby girl, with the assistance of the Denver Fire Department.
The couple named their baby girl Hannah Britanny.Baby Hannah and mom were then transported to St. Joseph Hospital, where they were resting Tuesday morning, according to Kobel. The family held an afternoon news conference to talk about the birth."I had no chance to be frightened because the pain was so intense," said Joanne Mihlstin. "The contractions were on one on top of the other.""The panic set in and there was a man on the motorcycle and I asked him if he knew how to deliver a baby," said Andrew Mihlstin. "He looks at me and says 'no' and takes off."Andrew said when he saw the baby's head on the seat, he knew he had to do something, so he drove around those gates, up on the sidewalk into the parking lot where he asked a security guard for help."I got out and I screamed, 'Do you know how to deliver a baby?'" said Andrew. "She said, 'Well, I grew up on a farm and have delivered many cows.'"Within minutes, Baby Hannah was born. Ironically, Joanne said her birth was easier than her two other kids."The first one was a cesarean," said Joanne. "The second was a nightmare and this one was really, really fast."The family has not seen the security guard since they met Tuesday morning, but they said they do plan to thank her in person for her help.
