Teen Cheerleaders Handcuffed At Air Force Academy

No Charges Filed; Investigation Under Way

POSTED: 8:24 am MDT October 20, 2006

Air Force officials are reviewing the behavior of an Air Force Academy security squad that handcuffed three cheerleaders before a football game last week and hauled them to jail.

Authorities said the girls used paper to cover up some of the letters of an elementary school sign on Air Force Academy grounds.

Their handiwork changed "Douglass Valley Elementary School" to read "ass Valley Elementary School."

The girls attend Air Academy High School, also on Air Force Academy grounds.

Officials at Air Academy, the school the girls attend, characterized the response as an “overreaction,” said Academy School District 20 spokeswoman Nanette Anderson.

School officials had asked security officers to allow the district to decide how to discipline the girls and not detain them, but the request was denied by the flight chief on duty.

In response to a parent’s concerns, the AFA asked Peterson Air Force Base to handle the investigation.

The girls were not charged with a crime and were released to their parents.
