DENVER -- The recent school tragedies across the country have many school administrators wondering what they can do to keep their kids safe.Starting a week from Monday, every student and faculty member at East High School in Denver will be required to wear identification badges at all times while on school grounds."If we see somebody that doesn't have their ID with them, we'll confront them about it and ask 'where's the ID,'" said assistant principal Bill Ewing.
"We have 2,200 students here. At many times, (it's) difficult to determine who should be in the building and who shouldn't," said Ewing."I don't mind it. I think it'll be cool," said freshman Josh Winn. "It's going to be hard to remember bringing it to school everyday. You will get in trouble if you do forget it.""I was worried that it's not going to look right with my clothes," said senior Janese Boyd. For the most part, students know the little inconvenience will pay off."I think they'll get used to it if they get the point that we're just trying to make the school much safer," said senior Blake Swain."Of course it's not a fool-proof plan from anything happening, but it is another step towards avoiding things to happen," said Boyd."You gotta do something," said Ewing. "This is one step we're taking."School officials said if a student forgets his or her ID, they will give them another one that day. But the next time they forget, they will have to pay for it.Next week East High will send out letters to parents to let them know about the new ID rule.So far East High School is the only school requiring students to wear badges at Denver Public Schools. But Jefferson County School District is also doing something a similar. The Jeffco School Board just approved $2.1 million for security equipment which includes ID card access readers.
