If your kids like to read, or if you want to encourage them to read, check out some of the summer reading programs being offered by Barnes & Noble, Scholastic and even your local library.
Many of the programs give kids free books for reading!
Barnes & Noble
Barnes & Noble's summer reading program is for kids in grades 1-6. Kids keep a reading journal, answer a couple questions and they get to pick a free book based on their grade level. Learn more on the Barnes & Noble website.
Scholastic
Read and log your minutes to earn virtual prizes. Then enter the summer sweepstakes to win prizes from Klutz. Learn more on the Scholastic website.
Chuck E Cheese
Chuck E Cheese has several rewards calendars, including one for reading. Mark the days that your child reads and when you bring the completed calendar to Chuck E Cheese, your child will get 10 free tokens as a reward.
Local libraries
Nearly every library in the metro area is hosting a summer reading program. Many of the programs give prizes, based on how many books your kids read. Here are a few programs I found:
