DENVER – Three Colorado ski resorts are among the top five most expensive winter destinations in the U.S., according to a new survey released by CheapHotels.org.
The ranking was based on the minimum price travelers will have to pay to stay in the cheapest* available double room, with the least expensive price averaging $243 for the night.
Vail took the top spot ($243) followed by Aspen ($227) at No. 3 and Breckenridge ($221) at No. 5.

The average price for each destination was determined for the winter months of December, January and February.
"I think it’s slowly becoming like an Aspen or Vail, I think popularity-wise, Vail and Aspen have the bigger name recognition, but I think Breck is definitely up there," said skier Mickey Martin, who was at Breckenridge Ski for Thanksgiving.
"It’s pretty expensive, but I worked really hard this summer so that I could make enough money to come," said Riley Beskar, whose vacationing from Minnesota.
Key West in Fla., and Sanibel Island, also in Fla., landed among the top five.

*Only hotels with at least a 3-star rating and those with a positive average feedback score from previous guests were taken into consideration by this survey.
