DENVER - "There is no Jamaican-based Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes," warns a local district attorney concerned after a constituent received a fraudulent call.
First Judicial District Attorney Pete Weir's office reports that their fraud hotline received a call from a citizen who reported she had received a call from the fictional sweepstakes. The woman was told she won $1.3 million but she became suspicious when she noticed the call was coming from a cell phone with an 876 area code.
That area code belongs to Jamaica.
"Beware of any unsolicited call that may come from the Jamaican area code of 876 and includes an offer that sounds too good to be true. Hang up the phone," Weir's spokesman Pam Russell wrote in a press release.
The real Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes is a direct marketing company based in the United States. It has no Jamaican base and does not notify winners by phone.
The DA's office also reminds everyone to never send or wire money to claim a prize.
The DA's fraud hotline is 303-271-6980.
