Free tax return preparation: Where to get your taxes prepared in the Denver metro area

DENVER – The 2017 Tax Filing Season is upon us and the deadline is fast approaching for you to get your return in.

Why spend some of that money before you even get it in the mail when you can get your taxes prepared for free? We did some research and found these locations offer free tax return preparation for qualifying taxpayers. 

Aurora

1. The Restoration Christian Fellowship is providing help for those wishing to file their tax returns. You must call the fellowship in order to set up an appointment to get your taxes prepared. The fellowship will only be preparing taxes until April 13. Services are only provided in English.

2. Aurora Central High School is helping get your taxes prepared for free. Services are provided in both English and Spanish. Walk-ins welcome. You have until March 11 to have your taxes prepared here.

3. Denver ABC – Wells Fargo Aurora is helping residents get some free tax help until April 15. Services are only provided in English. Appointments are not required.

Brighton

1. The Adams County Government Center is offering free tax preparation help until April 12. Services are only prepared in English and appointments are not required.

Commerce City

1. Adams City High School is offering free tax return help until March 11 in both English and Spanish inside the library. Walk-ins welcome.

2. Community Choice Credit Union is also offering help for Commerce City residents. Services are provided in both English and Spanish. Walk-ins welcome.

Denver

1. Denver ABC Valet at Denver Human Services - Castro is proving tax returns services until April 4. Services are provided in both English and Spanish. Walk-ins are.

Location: 1200 Federal Boulevard #1056. | Phone: (720) 944-3666 | Hours: Tuesdays from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

2. Denver ABC Valet at Center for Work Education and Employment is also offering free tax help. You have until April 6 to file your returns at this location. Services are only provided in English. Walk-ins welcome.

Location: 1175 Osage Street, 3rd Floor | Hours: Thur. 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

3. Emily Griffith Technical College is providing free tax preparation until April 10 in both English and Spanish. Walk-ins welcome.

Location: 1205 Osage Street | Hours: Monday 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

4. Denver ABC Supersite at Mi Casa Resource is providing free tax preparation until April 25. Services are both in English and Spanish. Appointments are not required.

Location: 360 Acoma Street| Hours: Mon., Tue., Wed: 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.; Sat. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

5. Regis University is helping people prepared their tax returns until March 20. Services are provided in both English and Spanish and walk-ins are welcomed.

Location: 3333 Regis Boulevard, Clarke Hall Room 378 – 3rd Floor | Hours: Monday 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

6. The Community College of Denver is helping residents prepare their tax returns until March 11. Services are provided in both English and Spanish. Walk-ins welcome.

Location: 1111 West Colfax Avenue – Center for Career and Technical Education. | Hours: Wed: 5: p.m. – 8 p.m.; Sat. 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

7. The University of Denver is not only a place for learning – it’s also a place where you can get free tax return help. Services are offered in English only and an appointment is required. You have until April 1 to get to your taxes prepared at Daniels College.

8. Montbello Branch Library is offering free tax help until April 15 in both English and Spanish. Appointments are not required.

9. Global Leadership Academy has volunteers willing to prepare your tax return for free until March 22. Services are provided in both English and Spanish and appointments are not required.

Location: 7480 N. Broadway | Phone: (303) 853-1930 | Hours: Wed. 3:30 p.m. – 7 p.m.; Sat: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Littleton

1. The Southwest Regional Council – SW region is provided free help for those still putting off their tax returns. An appointment is required and services are provided in English only. You have until April 10 to get your taxes prepared at this location.

2. Edwin A. Bemis Public Library is also providing some tax return help in Littleton. Services are provided in both English and Spanish and walk-ins are accepted. You have until April 13 to get your returns prepared at this location.

Wheat Ridge

1. The Senior’s Resource Center – Aspen is helping folks prepare their tax returns for free until April 14. Services are only provided in English and you must get an appointment in order to get your taxes prepared.

What is the VITA program? 

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

What you'll need to bring:

  • Proof of identification (photo ID)
  • Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents 
  • An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter may be substituted for you, your spouse and your dependents if you do not have a Social Security number
  • Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
  • Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R,1099-Misc) from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available
  • Proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit such as a blank check
  • To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms
  • Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number such as their Social Security number or business Employer Identification Number
  • Forms 1095-A, B and C, Health Coverage Statements
  • Copies of income transcripts from IRS and state, if applicable.
